Eltham Palace Tour, From Henry VIII to a 1930s Art Deco Masterpiece
Situated within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and something a little off the beaten track, Eltham Palace offers an amazing look at 1930's decadence. It's great for kids too. Managed by English Heritage this wonderful House is well worth a visit and is a short journey from Greenwich itself.
In the 1930's, all that remained of Henry VIII's childhood home was the Great Hall which lay in ruins. On the premise that they would renovate this to its original state, the millionaire textile couple, Stephen and Virginia Courthauld, built an adjoining 1930s mansion which is regarded as an Art Deco Masterpiece. We'll walk through the house imagining the glitz and glamour of the wild and decadent parties that once took place here, and take in all the quirky details such as a built in vacuum cleaner, a PA system, and a cage for their pet Lemur. Children can dress up as Virginia Courthauld or Henry VIII and there is a children's playground and interactive head sets which tell the story of the house in a very engaging way for all the family.
